From the mailbag:
"Dear MamaBear,
My 8 year old has finally gotten shoes with laces, and she just cannot get it through her head on how to tie them.
Help!
Thanks,
Anne in Georgia"
Dear AiG,
Remember when we were kids…and you had to tie your shoes in Kindergarten?
Oh, those were the days indeed!
But I digress. 🙂
Here's what I did to teach HS2:
Step 1.) Sit on the floor and have your child sit between your legs.
Step 2.) Have your child hold each shoelace in her hands.
Step 3.) Guide her hands in the 3 steps for tying a shoelace
1.) Make a loop
2.) Wind the other shoelace around that loop
3.) Push the wound shoelace thru the hole you just made
ie,
Step 4.) If she still doesn't get it, have her repeat step 1….20 times. Then have her repeat step 1 followed by step 2….20 times.
Step 5.) Add on step 3….20 times.
The key, you see….is repetition.
It will take time, but once learned…will never be forgotten.
Thus speaks…MamaBear
